Sharpen Your Skills – Power Mobility

(1.5 hr./ 0.15 CEU/CCU)

AOTA Category:  OT Service Delivery

  • CEUs/Contact Hours:  0.15 AOTA CEUs/1.5 Contact Hours
  • Educational Level: Intermediate

General Overview:

Clinicians and providers must be able to evaluate and train their clients with power wheelchairs and seating systems that meet their clients’ needs. This can be challenging when many clinicians and providers often lack time and first-hand exposure with how to utilize complex power wheelchairs to complete functional tasks.

In this 90-minute interactive class, participants will be able to improve their understanding of power wheelchair mobility skills in order help them better facilitate their clients’ skill acquisition and outcomes. This course will review strategies for maneuvering various types of power wheelchairs, as well as discuss applications of combinations of power seat functions to complete every-day functional tasks. Participants will actively utilize power wheelchairs and power seat functions to complete tasks and measure objective functional improvements. The impact of the seating system and power wheelchair programming on function and skill acquisition will also be explored.

By the end of this course, participants will have a better understanding and ability to apply power wheelchair driving considerations, practical uses of power seat functions, seating and programming considerations to the every-day functioning of their clients.

CEU Objectives: By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate 2 key strategies for maneuvering front-wheel drive and mid-wheel drive power wheelchairs when teaching power wheelchair driving skills.
  2. Practice 3 examples where combinations of power seat functions facilitate increased ability to complete functional tasks.
  3. Relate 3 ways that seating components may impact function in the power wheelchair.
  4. Experiment with 2 different programming parameters that impact driving and functional skill acquisition.
